Mardale Talk raises £336 for PMRT

Copy of Bampton & District Local History Society-2.png

The Drowning of Haweswater, Mardale & Wetsleddale is an amazing story of of how in the 1930s Manchester City Water Works took over beautiful valleys of the Eastern Lake District, excavated tunnels, evicted families and drowned the village of Mardale.

Local historian Ian Tyler brought this story to to life in a talk & book launch in late July. The event, co-sponsored by Bampton & District Local History Society and The Mardale Inn raised £336 for Penrith Mountain Rescue Team.

Ian's book is available by contacting him direct from here.

Community owned & Community run

After raising £400,000 to 'Save a Pub for the Valley', 'The Mardale Inn at St Patrick's Well' was purchased by over 500 members of Bampton Valley Community Pub in May 2022. The pub had been closed for 5 years and needed significant investment to secure its future.

As cash permitted, we reopened in a phased manner. We started with drinks only on July 1st 2022 and in late November 2022, with invaluable funding from The Prince's Countryside Fund, we reopened the kitchen.

Given amazing support from Inspiring Eden we refurbished all 6 of our bedrooms in 2023.  Visit our 'Sleep' page to learn more....

Beer at The Mardale

Serving local real ales well, all brewed within 50 miles of the pub, is really important to us at The Mardale. That's why we are delighted to have been recognised and listed in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide for both 2024 and 2025.
