Walking in Bampton Valley

This developing page provides a range of local walk options in Bampton Valley.​

Knipe Scar

Dominant on the east side of the Valley, Knipe Scar features in Wainwright's Outlying Fells ("the mile long green terrace along the rim of the Scar is a most delightful ramble"). Given its position above the Valley is the basis of Bampton Valley Community Pub's logo.

Moderate - Distance: 4.5 miles (7.4km), Ascent: 580 ft (172m)

If you're not staying at The Mardale, park at Bampton Village Hall. It's free but there's an honesty box on the building wall where a donation of £2 would be much appreciated!

Drybarrows

On the west side of the Valley, this circular walks takes you up past Ireland Wood and Drybarrows to the edge of Bampton Common offering multiple onward options. This documented route crosses open fells returns via The Howes. Beware it can be boggy in places and should not be undertaken in bad weather.​

Moderate - Distance: 4 miles (6.4km), Ascent: 580 ft (176m)
